Having not been to an evening gig before at the Night Owl, Digbeth, I was really excited to be visiting to see the band billed as the “wildest in the US” especially after instantly liking them on first hearing. I was also intrigued about what actually made them the wildest. Walking into the Night Owl was in a way like going back in time and I was impressed with the decor and the video walls sharing retro footage which added to the vibe. Being a fan of quirky bands, the first support band, Hospital Radio, were a very pleasant bonus and great fun to watch and set the scene. The singer had a kind of fun, enigmatic charm to him and I would definitely look to see these again in their own right. Following a brief interlude, the second support band The Head Hunters took to the stage, These were a very musically talented modern rock ‘n’ roll band. After some cool music, California’s The Schizophonics (who have been compared to Jimi Hendrix and Little Richard in style) took to the stage and instantly blew the audience away! I have been to many gigs in my time but can honestly say I have never seen such an energetic performance from a lead singer who physically could not have given it more (to the point his heel broke on his shoe, which only added to the electric atmosphere). It was also nice how the band engaged in slight breaks in performance of their 17 track set, discussing their interests in ghosts and Black Sabbath! I can only describe the night as a fantastic experience and hope all three bands get the success they deserve. Karen Hill (pics of support bands Hospital Radio and The Head Hunters)
