Following on from last year’s successful ten year anniversary shows, Fightstar appeared at Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall last night, performing tracks from previous albums and songs from their latest album, ‘Behind The Devil’s Back’. Credit should first be given to support bands Making Monsters and Arcane Roots who set the perfect tone in warming up the crowd. I haven’t seen Arcane Roots before and was very impressed with their original, flawless set, they could have been headliners in their own right!
The stage lighting for Fightstar was excellent and seemed to tease the already excited crowd even further before Fightstar took to the stage! From the moment Fightstar appeared on the stage, the atmosphere was electric! The band, which fronts Charlie Simpson of Busted fame, could not have been more different in style to Busted as they are a lot heavier. I was surprised and impressed how Charlie’s powerful voice could change from melodic to very raspy, enhancing the atmosphere even more. The crowd (who were surprisingly mainly male) seemed hypnotised by his commands, especially when he encouraged the already lively mosh-pit! Looking stylish in a modern, paisley style shirt, Charlie oozed a charizma as the very talented band belted out tracks such as ‘Grand Unification Part 1’ and ‘War Machine’ (which was my personal highlight of the gig.) Fightstar also played tracks from their new album, including their new single, ‘Animal’ which equally pleased the crowd. The time seemed to fly by, but my only disappointment is that Fightstar didn’t perform the awesome ‘Floods’ which I thought they may encore with. This didn’t seem to be a problem for the audience though as they loved every moment of this wild, rockin’ gig! I think what really made it was the musical talent and genuine raw passion and enthusiasm that Fightstar portrayed. Karen Hill
