After gigging over 250 times and writing over 100 songs, it is hard to believe that Charlie Leavy is just 19. She can play a variety of instruments including keys and ukulele, but mainly performs with her acoustic guitar. In her songs she manages to cleverly combine the styles of acoustic pop, folk, country, funk and blues. She has performed at Hyde Park as a prize for winning the London Pride’s Got Talent final and has been described as a “naturally gifted singer” by Tom Robinson of BBC Music fame. Charlie has also recorded songs in Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Her most played song on Soundcloud is Hero (sang in Spanish) which recently hit the 150,000 mark. The first thing that immediately struck me with the opening track on ‘The Best Damn Ride’ EP (The Way Life Is) was Charlie’s sweet and powerful voice. I also really appreciated the deep lyrics and the slightly retro funky beat. Vocally, she could be compared to Pixie Lott. It is a great choice of song to start the EP with. Another of my favourite tracks is Falter Baby, which I found extremely moving both lyrically and musically. It is obvious Charlie draws from her own experiences when writing her music. Music fans who appreciate folk will no doubt also appreciate the track ‘Tongue Tied’. ‘Wearing Your Kiss’ is another fantastic highlight and I liked it the very first time I heard it. It is more soulful but manages to be very catchy and uplifting. I can tell from this EP that Charlie is uniquely talented and recommend you check this out from a star in the making! (Although they are not on the EP, Charlie has done some amazing covers which are available to check out on YouTube. I have particularly enjoyed her cover of John Legend’s ‘All of Me’ and Pixie Lott’s ‘Mama Do’.) Find out more about Charlie here: http://www.charlieleavymusic.com/
